Celebrate International Education Week! November 16 – 20, 2009

Lesson Plan Format Form

Create a Cultural Lesson Plan to Celebrate Culture & Diversity!
Ready, set, action! It’s time to make the world come alive for US students. Song, dance, language, movies, books, food – there is so much to celebrate about culture. Part of being an Amity intern is to share your knowledge, language and experience with US students. By participating in international education week activities, interns are truly working to build international friendship and cultural understanding.

This year to celebrate international education week, Amity is conducting a Cultural Lesson Plan Contest. Amity strongly encourages all interns to participate in this contest! It provides an opportunity for interns to formally share their cultural through execution of a basic lesson plan with students. Interns should create and implement a lesson plan that shares their country, culture and/or language; then submit the lesson plan to Amity with visual documentation. Interns can work with their supervising teachers for lesson plan approval and to schedule the presentation of the lesson to their students.

Instructions
Please submit the Lesson Plan Form with visual documentation (photos or video) of your presentation. You can submit this form and photos via email to tbettencourt@amity.org. If you have a segment of your lesson video taped the video can be uploaded at http://www.youtube.com/group/culturallessonplan Videos should be no longer than five minutes. In order to upload the video on youtube.com, join the Amity Lesson Plan Contest Group, and then submit your video. Once you have uploaded your video email the link to tbettencourt@amity.org. The lesson plan submission and photos can also be mailed to Tiffany Bettencourt, Amity Institute, 3065 Rosecrans Place Ste. 104, San Diego, CA 92110.

The lesson plan must contain the following components:

Planning: Interns should think about what aspect of culture or language they would like to have the students learn. They should consider the age of the students and what their students already may know about the subject/topic. There should be list of objectives for the lesson. Interns should develop a written lesson plan that is approved by their supervising teacher. Interns need to make a list of what materials are needed for the lesson.

Execution: Working with their supervising teachers, interns will present lesson to students. While the lesson plan does not have to take up a whole class period, interns and teachers should schedule enough time to effectively implement the lesson.

Assessment: Interns should include a component where students are assessed on their grasp of the information and concepts. This can be verbal, written, or project based (i.e. tests, quizzes, written paper, creative project or group work).

Reflections: Interns should reflect on their lesson planning experience. Were the learning goals were achieved? Describe how the lesson plan worked. What worked well? What was challenging? How can students build on their knowledge of this topic in future lesson plans or activities? Overall, was the lesson plan successful? Why or why not?

Suggestions, Brainstorming & Resources

Arts: Explore international aspects of music, film, theater, literature, or dance. You can showcase arts in your country. Students could also compare one art form in several different countries (i.e. different dances throughout South America, famous literary figures in French speaking countries).

Communication: Create a pen pal project to connect classrooms across the world. This can be done via email, postal mail or web videos. Use this opportunity to work on grammar, verb tenses, and vocabulary.

Travel: Discuss the places you have traveled. Ask students to write essays on what countries they want to visit and why.

Diplomacy: Create a lesson that has students participate in a model UN, choose a conflict or challenge, have students resolve by end of the class period.

Media: Create a foreign language newspaper with students. Show an example of a newspaper or periodical from your home country. Have students conduct a writing exercise where they work together or in groups on articles.

Geography: Conduct a geography lesson that explores different languages spoken throughout the world. Many languages are spoken in more than one country. Have students research all countries where Spanish, French, or German are spoken. Students can also research the different ways that languages spread throughout the world (i.e. colonialism, global markets, and advances in communication).

Work with your supervising teachers – Your supervising teacher will be able to give you the best feedback in regards to what type of subjects or topics work with their classes.

Use the internet: The internet has many great resources for lesson planning and cultural sharing.
