INTERN INFORMATION

The following expenses should be taken into consideration by both the Intern and the Host School:
- Application fee (non-refundable) US $50
- Visa fees: Please enquire at your local US Embassy/Consulate
- Round-trip airline ticket: Varies by location and season
- Health insurance coverage (Approximately US $75 per month), must be purchased for entire length of assignment
- Proof of funds for personal spending money required in the amount of US $150 per month minimum
- Early departure fee: If Intern leaves assignment without authorization from Amity Institute there is a charge of US $100
Please review the following qualifications of an Intern's Host Family placement:
- Interns receive room and board free of charge from the Host Family
- Interns have a private bedroom in the home
- Interns will often live with multiple families during the course of an assignment, but should not be moved more than once every quarter (nine weeks)
- Interns will actively participate in family life and household chores
- Interns are responsible for all additional living expenses
- Interns are responsible for own transportation during free time
The following items should pertain to each Intern Teacher's assignment:
- Intern is provided with a Supervising Teacher to act as a mentor
- Intern will play a flexible role, commonly including:
- Assisting the teacher in the classroom/co-teaching
- Providing conversation practice with groups/individuals
- Giving cultural presentations
- Modeling pronunciation
- Participating in extracurricular activities related to language/culture
- Developing materials for language practice
- Intern may teach independently if mutually agreed upon by the Host School, Intern and Amity Institute during the invitation process
- Intern must be compensated at the standard rate for additional hours (up to a maximum of 10 hours per week)
While Interns are here they must take one or two Personal Study Classes, depending on assignment length. One class must address a topic in American Studies. These classes are mandatory, but must not interfere with the teaching schedule. The following items pertain to the Intern's Personal Study Classes:
- Interns do not need to take classes for credit or complete all coursework for grades
- Interns will receive a Certificate of Studies at the end of the assignment, potentially awarding university-level credits for: Intern Teaching (three credits), Conversational English, American Studies, Education in America (one credit each)
- Intern may use these credits for fulfilling study/internship abroad requirements with universities in their home country, if permitted
- Interns can take classes free of charge, by Host School arrangement
- Interns are responsible for tuition if classes are taken for credit
Interns work in their school for up to 25 hours a week, including preparation time and a maximum of four hours of administrative work. Interns may be asked to participate in staff meetings and special events, this participation is expected in addition to the 25 hours of volunteer service.
