AMITY FOUNDER EMILY STOWELL

Emily StowellFor over half a century, Emily Stowell devoted herself to promoting world peace and international cooperation by coordinating and supporting personal interaction between the peoples of different nations. As foreign language professors, she and her late husband, Ernest, served as volunteer student advisors, arranged educational and cultural exchanges abroad for local youth and taught special courses for visiting foreign students. Mrs. Stowell served as the Institute's Director for fifteen years and later was a member of the Board of Directors. Soon after her retirement from day-to-day involvement with Amity in 1979, she became a volunteer at the International Center of the University of California, San Diego, directing a variety of programs that addressed the special needs of spouses and families of resident foreign scholars.
